Unit Two - Arithmetic to Algebra

 This unit will focus on making connections between arithmetic operations and algebraic application. We will focus on simplifying and solving expressions for the first part of the unit. The second part of the unit will focus on using the properties of exponents. We will take the Unit Test on Sept 21. The unit will have two short formative quizzes so that students will have a chance to know what they need to work on to prepare for the unit test.  Our first unit will focus on classifying and performing mathematical operations on both rational and irrational numbers in the real number system. We will first learn how to classify numbers. We will then focus on applying the mathematical operations of addition, subtraction, multiplying and dividing to integers and multi-digit decimals. The last portion of the unit will focus on simplifying, adding, subtracting and multiplying radicals. We will also review square roots and recognizing perfect square roots. Each of the skills from this unit will be further utilized throughout the remainder of the course. There will be a quiz on August 17 on integers and decimals. A second quiz will be given on August 19 on perfect squares. A practice test will be given on August 27 with the Unit Exam given on August 31.  Resources that can be used for review or additional practice can be found in CTLS. Unit Three Equations and Inequalitites

 This unit focuses on solving equations and inequalities. Students will learn how to solve, graph and establish word problems using equations and inequalities. In addition, students will study solving systems of equations by elimination, graphing and substitution. They will also learn how to establish word problems using systems of equations to solve. This unit will have two quizzes and one summative exam.
