Welcome to Foundations of Algebra. I encourage you to use this time to increase your math skills and help prepare yourself for your future high school math courses. Please reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns. At the start of each unit I will provide an overview of the unit and resource materials. I recognize that math is a subject that often requires individual instruction. If a student misses class for any reason, I will work with them to cover the instructional material they missed. I a student knows they will have an extended absence, please contact me and I can set up a virtual meeting to go over missed class instruction.

Unit Two - Arithmetic to Algebra

 This unit will focus on making connections between arithmetic operations and algebraic application. We will focus on simplifying and solving expressions for the first part of the unit. The second part of the unit will focus on using the properties of exponents. We will take the Unit Test on Sept 21. The unit will have two short formative quizzes so that students will have a chance to know what they need to work on to prepare for the unit test.  Our first unit will focus on classifying and performing mathematical operations on both rational and irrational numbers in the real number system. We will first learn how to classify numbers. We will then focus on applying the mathematical operations of addition, subtraction, multiplying and dividing to integers and multi-digit decimals. The last portion of the unit will focus on simplifying, adding, subtracting and multiplying radicals. We will also review square roots and recognizing perfect square roots. Each of the skills from this unit will be further utilized throughout the remainder of the course. There will be a quiz on August 17 on integers and decimals. A second quiz will be given on August 19 on perfect squares.
